Blyth Spartans were formed in September 1899. At first the club played only friendly matches, until 1901 when they joined the East Northumberland League. After competing for three years they won thier first honour, and were crowned League Champions in the 1903-04 season, and again in 1906 and 1907 (Newcastle Utd were Division 1 Champions). Blyth joined the Northern Alliance for the 1907-08 season, were they remained for six seasons. In 1908-09 they won the Northern Alliance League, it was at the end of this championship winning season that they left their Thoroton Cottage ground to move to the newly opened Croft Park, which is still home to the Spartans. In the 1912-13 season Blyth were crowned champions of the Northern Alliance League for the second time, and subsequently moved to the North Eastern League and semi-proffessionalism status gained. Blyth remained in the NEL until its disbandment in 1958, in this 45 year spell only managed one Championship title (1935-36) and runners up (1922-23) to Newcastle Utd Reserves. |

In addition they won the League Cup in 1950, 1955 and were runners up in 1937. Following the disbandment of the NEL, Blyth competed int the Midland League and the Northern Counties League. Both ventures proved unsuccesful as the competitions collapsed. However in the early sixties the North Eastern League reformed, and once again Blyth competed. Sadly the League disbanded once again, this time for good, leaving the Spartans without a suitable semi-pro league to compete in. This led to Blyth turning Amatuer in 1964 and joining the Northern League, a league in which their record speaks for itself. They won the League title on ten occasions, and were runners up five time [see Honours List]. This success culminated in their promotion to the Unibond League (Northern Premier) at the end of the 1993-94 season. The clubs first season in the Unibond League (1994-95) was a huge success, the Spartans lifted the League title and the Unifilla First Division cup, at the first attempt. In 1995-96 the club finished a creditable sixth place in the Unibind Premier League and a good run in the FA Cup (2nd Rd). The last honour won by the Spartans was the Unibond Presidents Cup in 1996-97. |

Mention the name Blyth Spartans, and peoples immediate recollection will be one of their amazing FA Cup runs. Most notably the one in 1977-78, when they got as far as the 5th Round (proper), they had in fact made it into the bag for the Quatrer Final draw (Arsenal awaited). It was Wrexham who eventually ended the Spartans roller coaster ride, by beating them 2.1 in a replay at St James Park, Newcastle. Blyth could have been considered unlucky not to have finished off the tie at Wrexham, having led till an equaliser in the dying seconds, with a some what controversial goal. (Incidentally Wrexham had knocked Newcastle Utd out in the previous round, as well as going on to become Division 3 Champions).
