We were bottom of the league !! by The Ripper
During the Centenary Season club history must have been made with 14
sendings off.
In the early part of the season a man was sent off virtually every game,
or so it seemed.
I don't think Blyth were anywhere but rock bottom of the fair play league
all season.
1st - Leigh RMI (h) lost 0-1 - Michael Farrey.
1st game of the season ended with Farrey getting the red card, after
a challenge on a Leigh player, who was clean through. Most unusual for
him to be sent off.
2nd - Bishop Auckland (h) lost 0-2 - Tony Skedd.
'Attila the Hun' (alias Skeddy) exhibiting to the fans his main talent
of the nasty foul, a flash of ill temper and the march back to the dressing
room. Vinnie Jones, eat your heart out when skeddys about.
3rd - Bamber Bridge (h) lost 1-2 - Craig Melrose.
Only four days later and Craig Melrose gets the flash of the red card
after a Lancashire player deliberately threw his face in Craig's elbow.
4th - Gateshead (a) lost 3-0 - Wayne Edgecumbe.
This time it is the turn of striker Wayne Edgecumbe. First he retaliated
to a scum
player then was sent off for dissent.
5th - Leek Town (h) lost 2-3 - Graeme Robinson.
Graeme was the next to go as Blyth crashed to yet another home defeat.
He retaliated after a foul by headbutting a Leek player. Rumours begin
to circulate the club that Sky wanted the rights for our games to replace
Saturday Night Boxing.
6th - Leigh RMI (a) lost 5-3 - Andy Toman.
Out of the FA cup at the first attempt again, with Andy Toman getting
his orders for dissent. Not towards the ref but the goalkeeper! He never
played for Blyth again.
7th - Hucknall Town (h) won 1-0 - Craig Melrose.
The first win to correspond with a sending off. Melrose again doing
the club proud with his 2nd red card of the season. Funny, but he never
played again after that.
8th - Witton Albion (h) won 2-0 - Richie Pitt.
A new name added to the list. Richie reacted to a late tackle, by kicking
out in an off-the-ball incident in this FA Trophy.
9th - Stalybridge Celtic (h) lost 1-4 - Steve Stewart.
Stewart vacated the waterlogged pitch after his second yellow card.
10th - Stalybridge Celtic (a) lost 1-0 - Paul Symons.
Another Trophy tie another sending off. Paul Symons joined the roll
of shame for a for a beautifully executed two footed tackle from behind.
A brawl ensued with even the Celtic sub ran on to get involved amazingly,
no-one else was booked !
11th - Bamber Bridge (h) draw 2-2 - Ian Dixon.
Dixon made up for the extended wait, walking in this game for a viciously
wild, two footed tackle that almost snapped the player in half.
12th - Colwyn Bay (a) draw 0-0 - Ian Dixon.
Yes, Ian Dixon pops up again for his second exit of the season this
time for dissent. Its now neck and neck with Craig Melrose's record
with two-a-piece.
13th - Bishop Auckland (a) draw 1-1 - Steve Hutchinson.
Not to be left out, Hutch started walking before the card left the pocket,
after letting fly with another reckless tackle.
14th - Runcorn (h) won 4-2 - Ian Dixon.
The final game and he steams in takes the lead with 3 early baths. His
first game back after suspension as well !...
Blyth must have made club history, 14 red cards & it must have
been around 100 yellows in a turbulent season.
It would be interesting to see how our record compares to other clubs,
it would be a safe bet that no other club at this level or higher had
as many red cards .
Apparently some bloke called Norris McWurter wants to record that season
in his book of records.!
